Southern Research Institute, one of the nations leading not-for-profit research organizations, is seeking a highly motivated technical expert to lead cutting-edge research and business development efforts in the area of hot-gas cleanup. The qualified candidate will preferably have a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering, at least 10 to 15 years relevant experience desired, and have strong contacts in the government agencies and industries who would be potential clients for this type of research and testing.

This position will support the department director in managing hot-gas cleanup research at the corporate headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama and at the Power Systems Development Facility in Wilsonville, Alabama. The successful candidate will also provide hot-gas cleanup support to the Carbon-to-Liquids Development Center in Durham, NC, and develop new business in the area of hot-gas cleanup research.

The ideal candidate will preferably have knowledge of each of the six following areas of hot-gas cleanup, with in-depth expertise in at least three of the areas desired: (1) hot-gas desulphurization, (2) high-temperature cracking of tar and ammonia, (3) low-temperature tar cracking, (4) trace metal capture, (5) hot-gas filtration, and (6) CO2 removal.

An immediate full time opportunity is available in the Advanced Energy and Transportation Technology Department of Southern Research Institute. The successful candidate will lead applied research projects including development and evaluation of novel energy conversion processes and technologies. Technologies of interest include gasification, syngas cleaning, syngas to liquid fuels and chemicals, advanced power generation, and emission control technologies.

Specific duties will include technical and project management; supervision of testing staff and project support engineers; design of operating procedures and test protocols; design and selection of equipment for process development units and testing systems; collection and interpretation of field, pilot plant, and laboratory data; interacting with clients, preparing comprehensive reports, maintaining effective quality assurance, and business development support. Process and technology development efforts will occur at Southern Research?s energy development laboratories in North Carolina while technology evaluation and assessments will take place at client sites around the country.

Equivalent of ten (10) years of experience related to the job outlined above along with a minimum B.S. degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is desired. A demonstrated ability to manage small to medium sized projects, or portions of large projects, including scheduling, budget tracking, and client interactions is a priority. Familiarity with advanced energy and environmental technologies including pollution control equipment, gasification-based PDUs, and syngas cleaning equipment and methods, is strongly preferred. Further, knowledge of regulatory drivers, process and emissions engineering calculations, lab and field testing methods, pilot plant operating activities, and methods for assessing both operational and environmental parameters, are all important. Rapid advancement is possible in this rapidly growing department in North Carolina.
