A manufacturer of sensors and controls for various industries currently has the need for an Engineering Manager in their Dorchester County, MD office.  The Engineering Manager will focus on new product development, new process development, and sustaining/improving existing product designs to comply with all agency and customer requirements supporting our hydraulic-magnetic circuit breaker and circuit protection products.  The Engineering Manager is expected to work in conjunction with marketing to define product needs for the marketplace and to establish work team skills capable of delivering results in a timely fashion.  This role will report to the Vice President and Business Unit Manager of the Power Controls Global Business Unit located in Cambridge, Maryland.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Ø      The Engineering Manager will assume full ownership of the hydraulic-magnetic circuit breaker and circuit protection product design and product development, product/process engineering, tool design and ME/IE, document control, and all test lab/agency support. 

Ø      Work closely with marketing to fulfill new product requirements for the marketplace in a timely fashion as well as servicing a variety of product iterations.  The Engineering Manager is also responsible for directing the support for existing products/processes while implementing improvements in quality and efficiency on these existing products.

Ø      The Engineering Manager will supervise a team of 30 engineers and technicians.  Strong interpersonal skills are needed to work effectively with superiors, subordinates, suppliers, and customers.  The work includes a large variety of configurations with a customer base that demands prompt service.  Influencing skills are important as the candidate must leverage others in the organization to complete their goals.

Ø      Interact with outside customers and functional peer groups at management levels.  Interaction normally requires the ability to gain cooperation of others, conducting presentations of technical information concerning specific projects/schedules, etc.  Responsibilities include scheduling and facilitation of meetings, understanding customer requirements and expectations, and developing/driving actions and schedules needed to support those program expectations.  This will require working with cross-functional teams including marketing, materials, and manufacturing operations team.

Ø      Analyzes of technology trends, human resource skill sets and requirements, and market demand to plan projects. Confers with management, production, and marketing to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products. Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests

 

 

Education / Experience Required:

Ø      BS Mechanical Engineering (Masters preferred) plus 8-10 years of relevant experience

Ø      Circuit breaker development background a must!!!

Ø      Thorough understanding of Mechanical Engineering principles, materials, and mechanics is a must.  Having experience in the following areas a plus:

Ø      Understanding basic electrical circuit theory

Ø      Understanding of power management systems

Ø      Understanding of process control fundamentals and product test processes

Ø      DMAIC Six Sigma and/or Design for Six Sigma experience

Ø      3-D CAD modeling

Ø      Experience with multiple projects running concurrent and managing dynamic development paths required.

Ø      Must show evidence of successful participation in team-based project work and the ability to fill multiple roles.  Must possess the ability to understand higher-level aspects of a project and take responsibility for items outside their direct control.

 

 Additional Competencies Required:

Ø      Team leadership and team membership skills are needed coupled with a strong sense of individual responsibility.  Working effectively with other organizations (quality, marketing, purchasing, product support engineering, suppliers, and customers) is critical.  Must be able to influence others.

Ø      Success in this position requires good organizational savvy and good team-building and influencing skills; both in working with internal teams and external teams.  The candidate will also need to exercise good judgment.  He/she should understand their own level of decision-making and also understand when it is important to advise/involve management of difficult complex and high-risk situations.

Ø      The candidate should have a forward-looking perspective and should be constantly seeking to learn from current activities to drive improvements for the future.  The ability to be creative and innovative will assist in developing unique, differentiated solutions to complex problems.
