JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY

·        Acts as a technical expert for the Energy Resources organization

·        Provides engineering expertise in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned area

·         Plans and develops complex engineering projects concerned with unique and/or potentially sensitive issues

 

PREFERENCES

·        Electrical Engineering degree

·        Electrical Generation experience

·        Distributed Control Systems

·        Invensys/Foxboro controls experience

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·        Provides the engineering support and project management expertise associated with complex, large, and high impact generation related projects

·        Provides troubleshooting, condition assessment, vendor capability determination, and test and repair procedures

·        Communicates complex and sometimes unconventional engineering ideas, recommendations, and evaluations to diverse groups

·        Develops and implements projects and provides task updates

·        Creates and reviews work scopes, modifies/creates operating procedures, updates drawings, and reviews designs

·        Writes capital budget requests and provides justification for assigned areas

·        Oversees vendor supplied equipment

·        Leads or conducts performance, cost, and scheduling studies/evaluations of considerable scope and complexity

·        Represents the Company’s interests on diverse and highly technical engineering matters in various groups

·        Provides advanced technical support, direction, and activity supervision to the generation assets, contractors, and other associates

·        Applies extensive and advanced engineering to improve or develop new standards for diverse engineering activities

·        Functions as a supervisor for staff engineers, professionals, technicians, and others

 

COMPETENCIES

·        Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply diverse engineering principles and economic and decision analysis studies of complex issues to area problems including generation, process, fuels, planning, financial and regulatory issues, asset utilization, and environmental controls and regulations

·        Demonstrates highly specialized and unique knowledge in a technical area that is of value to the Company

·        Knowledge, understanding, and commitment to express and implement the Company’s vision and goals

·        Ability to translate theory and physics to power plant applications

·        Comfortable working in and around high temperatures, pressures, voltages (up to 345kV), and large rotating equipment

·        Demonstrates good leadership skills

·        Advanced interpersonal skills

·        Self-motivated

 

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

·        Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from a four year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET), with seven to nine years of experience, to include two years of management experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the discipline.

·        Project experience is required

·        Masters degree is preferred

·        Three or more years of on-site plant engineering experience is preferred

·        Power Production Engineer V possesses both special knowledge and experience or is unique in their value to the Company.  This level of engineer is for those individuals whose technical/professional responsibilities are significant enough to warrant a salary level comparable to management level jobs.  Promotion to a Power Production Engineer V requires that the need for this level of engineer exists; market data supports placement in this level and it is approved by a Vice President.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

·        Professional Engineer’s License in the State of New Mexico required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Plans, organizes, trains, directs, and supervises the work of staff engineers, professionals, technicians, and others as needed. Evaluates the progress and results of staff personnel and recommends necessary changes to achieve area objectives.  If functioning solely as a staff specialist without supervisory responsibilities, other engineers, professionals and technicians may assist the incumbent on individual projects.

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

·        Ability to read, interpret various documents and apply national, state and local codes and standards

·        Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, write speeches, and presentations

·        Ability to speak effectively before various groups

 

COMPUTER SKILLS

·        In depth knowledge of personal computers

·        In depth knowledge of electrical engineering design, computer aided design, project management, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software

 

ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out complex instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with complex problems involving several concrete variables in complicated situations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequent sitting, standing, and walking necessary.  May need to crouch, bend, and climb.  Will be exposed to outside elements and will work at various heights.  May lift 50 pounds or less.  Protective equipment required includes a hard hat, safety glasses, and hearing protection.  Will work around operating machinery, pressure piping, pressure vessels, electricity, computers, office equipment, and construction equipment.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Time will be divided between office and field.  This position may be located at either coal fired or gas turbine generating sites within the Company generating asset fleet.  Must be comfortable working in a coal fired or gas turbine generation site.
