Job Summary: Responsible for designing, developing, and implementing a variety of simple to complex electro-mechanical systems supporting advancement of research at the Janelia campus. This activity requires a through knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, theory and application. The ME will work collaboratively with research customers and department colleagues.
Principal Responsibilities: Design, develop, assemble, integrate, test, and optimize simple to complex systems for neurobiological research. Applications will include development of apparatus, sub-assemblies and component parts.Studies the project concepts, objectives, priorities, and requirements; analyzes user and potential user input; identifies and establishes performance standards involving stress, strain, thermal, shock, vibration, acoustic, and radiation inputs and other system parameters and variables as needed.Collaborate in the development of robust systems that can be distributed and replicated at multiple sites. Solid documentation management skills are required.Assists with interpretation of requirements from Janelia research groups on short and long-term projects. Translates the requirements into mechanical concepts, designs and plansProvide shared resource support to the campus as a whole.Execute designs in a 3D CAD environment, perform design analysis, create drawings and perform document (revision) controlEstimates up front costs, and then tracks time, effort, and supplies and materials costs for projects to enable proper charges to customers.Other duties, as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: B.S. Mechanical / Biomedical Engineering or the equivalent work related experience required, MS preferred. Experience working in an active laboratory environment helpful. Minimum of 1 year experience in developing scientific instrumentation. Experience working in neurobiological research, helpful Requires technical aptitude - comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering theory, principles and practice. Experience with design and implementation of instrumentation and automation desired. Ability to understand core project requirements, which will be of a scientific as well as technical nature, and suggest multiple options. Must have the ability to perform design work in a 3D CAD modeling environment. Autodesk Inventor experience preferred. Multi-tasks and prioritize work on projects Good skills required in assuring the quality performance of project work, as well as working within project schedule and budget. Must be organized, and able to clearly document work. Ability to interact with research and management personnel at all levels. Ability to provide equipment users with a safe work environment.
