This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for individuals who desire a career in the publishing industry. The position is administrative in nature and exposes the candidate to all facets of the publishing process. It is a role where adherence to deadlines, organization, prioritization of duties, teamwork and collaboration, and effective communication skills are integral to success.
Reporting to either the Director of Learning Solutions or the Acquisitions Editor, the Editorial Assistant will assist the publishing team in the overall creation and development of the products and communicate with internal and external customers, authors, reviewers and other team members. The Editorial Assistant is indirectly accountable to the overall product team as well as the success of assigned list(s). Job accountabilities:
Systems Acumen- Working knowledge of, and ability to utilize the computer programs and systems necessary to run our publishing program effectively. These include, but are not limited to, Outlook, Gelco, IPS, JDE, RMS, and CRMS.
Business Skills- Office proficiency necessary to function effectively in a support role within a publishing environment. These include, but are not limited to, phone etiquette, meeting organization, writing letters, booking travel, processing checks, managing contracts and routings, maintaining and updating book files, and following all internal processes and procedures.
Editorial Skills- Professional responsibilities in support of assigned publishing list(s). These include, but are not limited to, identifying and qualifying editorial leads, compiling and assessing market reviews, preparing contributor agreements, analyzing and summarizing competitive products, executing market research as needed, communicating with authors, securing permissions and photo acquisitions, supporting your editor through outreach to customers, reps, and partners, and contributing to editorial and product teams as necessary.
Qualifications
· A.A.S. in business, office technology, or related discipline or the equivalent theoretical depth required; post-secondary education (e.g. Bachelor’s of Arts or Science in English or business administration) desired.
· Strong organizational skills required
· Clear, predictable communication skills (both written and verbal) required
· Basic computer skills required; ability to perform advanced word processing techniques desired; spreadsheet work (Excel) desired
· Strong orientation to detail work and follow-through are critical
· Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting
