PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this position is to provide strategic leadership in the implementation of the broad role that the Technology Transfer and Economic Development (TTED) directorate plays in support of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and its research directorates.

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Manage major activities and identify new opportunities for collaboration with public and private sector organizations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with major economic development partners in the multi-state “Lab of the South” region to include the Commissioners/Secretaries of Economic Development or Commerce in each state and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
- Manage the work of ORNL staff and subcontractors in the planning, identifying and assisting in the recruitment of sponsors, and recruiting speakers and student teams for the “Global Venture Challenge”.
- Serve as the primary point of contact on planning and execution of strategic events.
- Coordinate and manage as appropriate TTED’s work in existing transportation-related projects, such as the Automotive Research Alliance and USAutoPARTs, the emerging Michigan-based and industry-sponsored pre-competitive R&D center.
- Responsible for generating business prospect leads and facilitating the attraction of new public and private sector collaborations with ORNL.
- Act as a capture manager and facilitator by identifying and proactively pursuing potential economic development collaboration opportunities in conjunction with and at the request of appropriate individuals in the research directorates and elsewhere within ORNL.
- Identifies and converts high-level and high payoff opportunities into programs and projects that bring funding into ORNL.
- Identifies new opportunities to connect public and private organizations to ORNL in ways that contribute to the mission of TTED while also supporting the priorities of the research directorates.

- Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in business, planning, marketing or related field is required with a minimum of ten years of senior experience involving a combination of community, technology and economic development marketing and recruitment. Strong organization, facilitation, planning and execution skills required. Must be self-motivated and self directed. Excellent written and oral communication skills and good interpersonal skills required. Proven ability to work as a team member in a collaborative environment. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively, and display strong leadership and organizational skills.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED: Master’s degree in business, planning, marketing or related field is preferred. Prior experience coordinating and managing a major, multi-day event highly desirable. Familiarity with ORNL and promotion of technology-based economic development programs are highly desirable.

WORK DIRECTION AND INTERFACES: This position reports to the Director, Economic Development & Partnerships for all aspects of job performance as well as task assignments and priorities. The incumbent will interface with others within TTED for tasks specifically undertaken for them, and is responsible to customers for timely and accurate work.
MEASURES OF EFFECTIVENESS:

- Successful planning and execution of the annual “Global Venture Challenge” and other major events/activities as evidenced by level of participation, number and level of sponsorships, and, in the case of the GVC, the diversity of student teams.
- Successful management of existing areas of responsibility.
- Enhanced connection of ORNL to the strategies of state economic development organizations.
- Successful conversion of partnership opportunities identified by research directorates and others into formal business arrangements with organizations and companies.
- Identification of areas for possible collaboration with ORNL and utilization of a process that converts opportunity into a concrete business relationship for ORNL.
