Position Summary
This position with a majority of the assignment in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences will teach core Early Childhood Education classes including those courses that involve supervision of students at campus Child Development Centers and at programs in the community in order to prepare students for entry level jobs. The position requires outreach to early care and education providers in the community, and participation in local initiatives designed to support and improve Early Childhood programs and services. This position may involve general coordination duties in the future. The assignment may include day, evening, and weekend responsibilities. This faculty position is represented by the Faculty Association Unit, AFT 6157.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Teach a 100% load in the field of Early Childhood Education. Course assignments will include introduction to early childhood programs and practicum in curriculum and may include, but not be limited to, student teaching, art and creative activities, music and movement, language activities, parenting classes, child development, administration and supervision of early childhood programs, health and safety, and child, family and community.
2. Currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility.
3. Communicate subject matter clearly, correctly and effectively.
4. Appropriate preparation and organizational skills in area of assignment.
5. Foster a professional working environment.
6. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings.
7. Fulfill collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, curriculum development, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in campus life activities.
8. Participate in course schedule development and program review within the discipline.
9. Use and develop a variety of effective teaching techniques and assessment methods to engage student interest and support a variety of learning styles including the use of computers and information technology.
10. Evaluate student oral presentations, projects, and written work using clear explicit criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives.
11. Maintain and submit accurate records (i.e., grades, syllabi, census reports) according to published deadlines.
12. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs and activities that would enhance the development of the department.
13. Demonstrate an overall sensitivity to and understanding of diversity throughout the regular course of work.
14. Participate in articulation and recruitment networking with high schools and transfer institutions.
15. Continue professional development and remain current in field through course work, conferences, workshops, or other appropriate means.
16. Participate in local, state and community-based initiatives in Early Childhood Education.
17. Direct the work of student assistants as assigned.
18. Supervise early childhood students in Child Development Center laboratory school settings, Mentor Teacher sites, and approved community-based Early Childhood Education programs.
19. Serve as liaison and resource to Child Development Center laboratory school staff.
20. Conduct required office hours.
21. Advise early childhood students on program, employment requirements, and career development.
22. Work with parents and teach parenting skills.
23. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Master's in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR the equivalent.
2. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.
3. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Two years of college teaching experience in the last five years in early childhood education.
2. Three years of successful teaching experience with children under the age of six.
3. Experience supervising students in child development laboratory settings.
4. Experience supervising adult volunteers and staff in community-based early childhood education programs.
5. Involvement with local, state or community-based early childhood initiatives.
6. Recent experience in curriculum development in early childhood education including but not limited to inclusion of children with special needs, multicultural observation, assessment and educational standards.
7. Active participation in professional organizations.
8. Bilingual fluency and the ability to develop programs in Spanish.
