Full Time ; 1664 hours annually
GRADE: 8

DESCRIPTION:
Under minimal supervision while in the classroom, assists in providing an innovative, professional, licensed, certified, nurturing early care and educational experience to benefit the children and families of the CC Community. Assists in implementing age-appropriate individualized curriculum to foster growth and development socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively for each child. To be a flexible, adaptive, reliable, confidential resource for families.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assists in implementing learning experiences that advance the intellectual and physical development of children, including improving the readiness of children for school.
- Assists in providing an environment to promote success and challenge for all children as appropriate.
- Assists in planning daily for small groups, large groups and individuals. Assists in providing concrete learning activities and relevant and meaningful experiences for children from 6 weeks to Kindergarten.
- Work effectively with children, including children with special needs and circumstances.
- Identify and report children’s needs using observation, reporting, discussion and follow-up. Recognize children’s interests and suggest incorporating their ideas as appropriate.
- Use a variety of appropriate behavior and management techniques and positive reinforcement to maintain a relaxed atmosphere. Implement positive guidance that is appropriate for the developmental level of the children.
- Interact appropriately with children to provide opportunities to develop self-esteem, social competence, and integrated development in all areas with adults and peers.
- Maintain positive communication with families on a daily basis. Assist in creating and maintaining therapeutic relationships with families.
- Responsible for food handling to meet USDA and sanitation regulations as required by the Colorado Health Department.
- Ensure that materials, equipment and learning environment are safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate.
- Administer and document first aid and CPR when necessary.
- Report any suspected case of neglect or abuse to a Child Protection Agency or Department of Human Services. Responsible for maintaining confidentiality in matters pertaining to children and families.
- Know the concepts, theories, and principles of early childhood best practices and child development, and be able to generalize to all situations.
- Assist new staff and substitutes.
- Must support and contribute to the goal of achieving greater diversity at Colorado College and work effectively with the many constituencies on campus.
- Assists in promoting a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe situations and accidents; following College procedures; requesting and using appropriate protective equipment; and participating in appropriate safety training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- High school graduate plus specialized training in Universal Precaution Procedures and Colorado Adult and Child Food Program Procedures. Associate’s Degree in related educational field preferred.
- Two years related experience. Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Nine continuing education credits each year. Red Cross Adult and Child CPR and First Aid. Group Leader qualification as defined by the Division of Child Care, Colorado Department of Human Services. CDA or working towards a CDA certification. Must have pre-employment physical examination, TB test, and proof of current vaccinations. Employment is contingent upon a fingerprint investigation and subsequent monitoring through the CBI and FBI.
- Frequent bending, standing, crawling, stooping, reaching, carrying and pushing; moderate physical effort (lifting up to 50 lbs.) Good vision and hearing. Environment is frequently noisy or dusty, and often involves working on the floor or with small tables/chairs. Exposure to chemicals and solvents, bio-waste and blood pathogens, and infectious diseases.
SKILLS:
- Proficient with computer software programs such as WordPerfect and photo/print programs preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and basic business math. Ability to think critically and solve problems. Handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion. Good judgment, organizational, and customer service skills. Knowledge of emergency evacuation techniques.
- Ability to operate the telephone, copying machine, television, VCR, tape player, dishwasher, stove, microwave, stroller, personal computer, printer, fax machine, calculator, typewriter, washer/dryer, etc.
