Excellent leadership, strategic planning, interpersonal communication and analytical skills are essential to the success of our District Managers. Traveling 75% of the time, our District Managers are responsible for all aspects of retail operations including driving sales, directing financial management and ensuring that profit goals, productivity goals and customer service standards are consistently achieved for multiple locations. District Managers also proactively recruit candidates for General Manager positions, oversee merchandise and inventory management systems and coordinate new store openings and expansions. We prefer candidates that have at least 2-3 years of experience managing in a large or multi-unit retail environment with at least $50 million in volume.


Responsibilities Specific to the District Manager Include, But Are Not Limited To:



Overseeing all facets of district store operations of assigned stores to maintain and build on Borders' position as the leading group of Book, Music and Cafe stores.
Driving sales, financial management and ensuring that district profit and productivity goals are met
Creating and cultivating a district where diversity is valued and incorporated into areas such as staffing, inventory, visual presentation, customer service, etc.
Ensuring that superior customer service standards are met consistently within the district.
Overseeing the training and development of potential internal management candidates to support the rapid growth of the company, particularly within the district. Assists the RD in evaluating candidates for company-wide bench strength assessment.
Working in conjunction with the RD and Field HR group, for the proactive recruitment of GM external candidates as needed to staff new and existing store management positions.
Participating in the evaluation process of future leaders of the company.
Overseeing all merchandise and inventory management systems to remain competitive in the marketplace.
Promoting participatory management and ensuring a positive working environment in all assigned stores.
Overseeing all facets of new store openings/expansions within the district.
Driving a district approach including district public relations, district events, district promotions, and sponsorship of appropriate market-based groups/non-profits.
Acting as a liaison between the stores, the Regional Director and Home Office.

Required Skills:

2-3 years experience managing a large or multi-unit retail operation.
Strong leadership qualities and the ability to set goals, establish performance standards.
Ability to travel for substantial amounts of time and on short notice.
Solid strategic planning skills and the ability to take a proactive approach to addressing issues.
Administrative skills in the areas of planning, organizing and managing time.
Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on building partnerships, managing conflict and negotiating.
Excellent communication skills in listening, informing, oral and written.
Cognitive skills relating to quantitative analysis, decision making, handling details and designing strategies.
Proven record in coaching and developing people to improve performance and achieve professional goals.
Ability to motivate people, instill accountability, and achieve results.
