The iPlant Collaborative (iPC) will be developing an advanced cyberinfrastructure to facilitate the solution of grand challenge problems in plant sciences. It is funded by a large ($50M), five-year grant from the National Science Foundation. The Director of Cyberinfrastructure Development (DCD) is responsible for managing the software development projects, facilities, and staff required to support the needs of grand challenge teams and the larger community of biologists, computer scientists,computer engineers, and information scientists working on computational problems in plant sciences. The DCD is one of three managing directors of the iPC, along with the Director of Community Interactions and the Director of Education, Outreach and Training.The DCD will report to the Project Director and serve on the iPC management team.
The Director of Cyberinfrastructure Development is responsible for (1) hiring,training, and supervising a team of software developers to design and implement high-quality application software in support of iPlant’s Discovery Environments, (2) hiring, training, and managing system and database administrators and user support staff; (3) planning, acquiring, integrating,and maintaining computational infrastructure in cooperation with existing enterprise resources and participants; (4) coordinating infrastructure and software development activities at all of the distributed iPC sites;(5) evaluating and adopting emerging computational tools and techniques; and(6) establishing and coordinating working relationships and synergisticactivities with similar projects and entities.
Required Qualifications
1. 5+ years experience leading technical and software development activities related to scientific applications preferably in biology or related fields.
2. 5+ years experience managing large,multi-developer software projects, preferably ones in which the participants are geographically distributed.
3. Experience managing all phases of the software development/implementation life cycle, including requirement specification,scheduling of resources, design and documentation, testing, cost estimation,standards, release management, software change management, and process compliance.
4. Experience managing an advanced multi-user computing facility and staff.
5. Experience with project management, remote collaboration/remote meeting tools, and environments.
6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
7. Master's degree in a computing field or a Master's degree in a biology field.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
1. Ph.D. in a computational or biological field.
2. Experience in an academic environment, either as a faculty member or as manager of a multi-user academic computing facility at a research-intensive academic institution.
3. Experience in the use of agile or iterative-type software development lifecycles and techniques.
4. Strong grasp of current software development methodologies, databases,operating systems, and virtualization technologies (storage and processing).
5. Experience managing projects with interdisciplinary research teams and coordinating team activities in geographically distributed development environments.
6. Experience with high performance computing (grid, shared memory, clusters),managed storage, and visualization.
7. Knowledge of the computational needs of the bioinformatics or computational biology communities, and familiarity with popular applications, algorithms, and data repositories.
8. Development experience using Web 2.0 technologies.
9. Experience with data and metadata management and security/risk management.
