Position Description:
JOB SUMMARY: Performs minor trailer and truck repairs including component replacement requiring minimal diagnostic skills. Makes good value decisions following established guidelines. Provides general non diagnosis-type assistance to mechanics and maintenance team leaders. Completes routine repair work in the areas of tire changing, minor electrical, hydraulic, and minor accident repairs including completing the appropriate paperwork. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performs duties in both the trailer, tractor and express areas of the shop when completing trailer Planned Maintenance (PMs), annual inspections and minor repairs on door seals, hardware, minor electrical, brakes, mud flaps, routine Qualcomm repairs, blower motors, and minor body work. Reads paper or electronic instructions to understand, document and close work orders to be completed. 2. Works outdoors at the fuel island or similar areas to perform safety, or other related inspections and write-ups. 3. Performs express-related services including tire changing, minor brake, electrical, and safety related inspections and work. 4. Inspects components including: loose tie rod ends, king pins, wheel bearing, hood adjustment, and air ride height etc. 5. Utilizes computer system (M5 and internet) to accurately create, track and complete work order repairs including the tracking of time (labor hours), parts used, work completed and locate technical information on the SNI Intranet or vendor web sites. 6. Estimates required repairs or directs the estimation to a qualified Mechanic who can further diagnose and estimate the required repair, cost and repair timeline. 7. Communicates with internal customers (i.e. other shop associates, drivers, DRIVER BUSINESS LEADERs, other maintenance shops) on such things as stances, wait times, reasons for repair decisions and status updates. 8. Utilizes forklift and company vehicles to unload, stock, and pick up parts at local vendors, dealers/suppliers and stages Planned Maintenance (PMs). 9. Assists Mechanic(s) on tractor and trailer repairs that DO NOT require diagnosis or independent judgment and decision making. 10. Steam cleans and washes wide range of parts and equipment. 11. When necessary, performs duties from service truck.
Qualifications:
1. Strong mechanical aptitude. (ie: Must be able to certify as a brake inspector.) 2. Skill with windows based computer systems, preferred. 3. Technical reading aptitude (i.e. electronic service bulletins; auto repair manuals). 4. Valid drivers license. (NOTE: Associates also functioning as over the road drivers must have a qualified CDL.) 5. Excellent customer service, oral and written communication, and teambuilding skills. 6. Basic welding skills. 7. Ability to provide own basic hand tools. (The Shop Manager or Shop Supervisor will cover other required tools.) 8. Must become a certified Brake Inspector and Annual Vehicle Inspector (only after associate meets DOT requirements) within 6 months of being hired as a General Mechanic. 9. **In Canada, General Mechanics will be known as Apprentices and are required to have a Diesel Apprentice license and be enrolled in the Diesel Apprentice Program.
