One of our well-respected clients is in need of a Development Chemist to assist in the formulation and development of household and institutional or industrial cleaning products.
BS degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
5-8 years practical experience in formulating and developing household, institutional or industrial cleaning products.
Working knowledge and understanding of formulation scale-up evaluations and manufacturing processes.
Strong technical and communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
5-8 years experience planning, implementing and documenting formulation projects that originate from broadly stated objectives.
5-8 years experience working with new raw materials for modifications of existing formulations.
Excellent PC skills with proficiency in the use of spreadsheets, word processing, and statistical experimental design.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan and execute formulations of chemical based cleaning products. Requires in-depth knowledge of surfactants and emulsion chemistry, investigation of competitors product structures and intellectual properties (patents); identification and selection of raw material and component sources; practical understanding of manufacturing processes adaptability; and optimization for costs.
2. Determine and specify chemical ingredients and suppliers. Requires in-depth knowledge of emulsifiers, detergents and functional materials, and the basic functions each provides, and manufacturers/suppliers inaction; understanding of formulation target requirements; cost limitations; materials availability and impact on manufacturing processes; and toxicity and environmental safety.
3. Verify and understand target end users requirements for product formulations and devise testing to properly evaluate. Including physical, functional, chemical, and toxicological characteristics, chemical stability, compatibility with other components, and environmental impact.
4. Plan, implement and document formulation projects originating from broadly stated objectives.
5. Determine and establish appropriate product specifications and procedures to demonstrate end users requirements are consistently met.
6. Review new and/or existing product formulations and undertake to optimize for cost, and make adaptable for scale-up and commercialization.
7. Conduct investigations of competitor product compositions, performances, and market advantages. Interpret analytical finding to support marketing programs, product launches, etc.
8. Coordinate with other members of project team to deliver products that meet target requirements.
9. Promote oral and written communication to keep team members, management, and others up to date to their satisfaction.
10. Manage formulation lab supplies and materials to maintain sufficient supply to perform formulation duties. Contact suppliers, place orders, and perform other administrative work relative to the daily performance of formulation development and evaluations.
11. Assist the manager of Chemical Development in:
Estimating resource needs to meet critical timelines.
Planning activities and scheduling tasks to support market needs.
Increasing efficiency and productivity in support of ongoing efforts to reduce product development cycle time.
Estimating annul budgets for supplies, equipment, and capital equipment needs.
Documenting results and status of projects.
12. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
