POSITION SUMMARY
The Dean of Business and Management has primary responsibility and provides leadership for all instructional programs in Business. The Dean is responsible for curriculum development, implementation, administration, planning and scheduling; student advisement and retention; faculty recruitment, supervision and development; short and long term strategic planning; budgeting; interaction with industry advisory boards and other external constituencies; and accreditation and licensing activities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Accountability: Strategic Planning and Leadership
The Dean is expected to assist the DAA in the development of an academic vision and strategic plan including: • Establish and effectively communicate academic priorities that are consistent and supportive of the priorities and vision for the university. • Develop initiatives that support program growth, quality instruction, student success and customer service. • Assist with capital and expense budget planning, identifying professional development needs for staff and faculty, and identifying processes, procedures and tools that will provide support. • Actively serve as a member of the DAA’s academic leadership team. • Assist in the development and implementation a local marketing plans devised to increase community awareness and student enrollment.
Accountability: Academic Operations
The Dean is expected to manage day-today operations of the department including: • Participate in the student registration process. • Monitor and evaluate student retention. • Forecasting and management of department expense budgets. • Advise students on their academic plan of study and ensure students are making satisfactory progress towards graduation. • Management of academic support initiatives. • Forecast annual course offerings. • Manage program book lists. • Evaluate student academic appeals. • Respond to student/parent concerns in timely manner. • Provide support to the Registrar (e.g. Evaluate transcripts for credit, assist with the registration process, develop proficiency exams, and assist in the training of faculty in local processes and procedures). • Participate in disciplinary hearings as requested. • Interface with Admissions in support of recruitment process for Business students
Accountability: Program Management and Growth
The Dean is expected to effectively manage programs in the department and provide opportunity for enrollment growth including: • Evaluate and manage faculty and staff. • Participate in the recruitment and selection of faculty, including interviews and teaching demonstrations. • Direct and supervise faculty development. • Plan and generate faculty assignments. • Evaluate faculty performance and ensure quality instruction. • Plan and conduct regular Faculty meetings • Plan, oversee and participate in annual program reviews and assessment activities. • Manage the evaluation of curriculum.
Accountability: University Outreach
The Dean is expected to support university outreach activities that will increase awareness and student enrollment including: • Active participation in planning and execution of University Day Activities • Provide strategic leadership in collaboration with other Academic Leadership members • Plan and administer department budget • Participate in development of 3-Year Plan • Attend and participate in Industry Advisory Councils • Represent the University on external advisory committees, Chamber meetings, associations and other civic and private organizations.
Additionally, the Dean may be assigned other local, regional, or special duties in addition to or in lieu of some of the above.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
• A Masters degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a related field. • At least 3 years of successful teaching experience in higher education and 3 years of successful and progressive leadership/management experience in an educational setting. • Strong interpersonal and team building skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. • The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization. • The ability to develop, coach and mentor employees as individuals and as a team. • The ability to learn and analyze current processes and procedures and provide feedback and/or recommendations to the academic leadership team. • Proficient use of software tools to assist in day-to-day operations as well as planning and development. • The ability to read and understand academic policy and apply it in an appropriate manner. • The ability to foster excellent customer service in a human resource intensive environment that will encourage a high level of employee morale and student success.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job primarily resides at the Crystal City Campus with limited travel to the DeVry University Centers in Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina as needed. This position involves a significant amount of time using a computer, sitting at a desk, visiting classrooms, standing and speaking, and commuting between local campuses/centers. There is some light lifting of office and teaching supplies (e.g. text books, binders, etc.), normally not to exceed 5 lbs. Carrying a personal laptop computer is required. The typical workweek is 5 days and may include some weekends. There are also extended days that may occur during registration/orientation weeks.
