We are currently seeking a committed, caring and courageous individual to work for The Next Step Domestic Violence Project of Washington and Hancock Counties, Maine, a nonprofit agency devoted to serving the needs of people affected by domestic violence while working with and educating the community. This person will need to work independently in the Calais office at least two or three days a week, accompanying people during some court actions, assisting clients as needed and promoting our services and expanding our presence in eastern Washington County. At other times, he or she will work out of our Machias office (where most of the initial training period will occur) and will occasionally work in Hancock County. Specific duties include presenting information about domestic violence to the public on every level from one on one to large audiences, developing agency marketing and public relations, and working with our attorney and legal team, most particularly by accompanying victims of domestic violence to court in Calais. Must be able to learn detailed work about filling out orders of protection, etc but need not have any prior legal experience.

All employees assist and advocate for the people that we serve, cover hotline shifts, and participate in various collaborative efforts.

Applicants must be able to work flexible hours, be willing to travel as needed, and work well as a part of a team. Also must also be able to work independently with dependability and reliability.  Prior related experience isn’t necessary but understanding of domestic violence and sensitivity to all related issues is very important, as is an ability to work well with people, excellent communication skills, computer literacy, and ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently as well as maintain complete confidentiality. Must have good organizational abilities, be able to handle stress well and be self-motivated. Some weekend and evening work required. Associates or Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred, but experience may substitute.
