CLASS SUMMARY
The Security Officer I works under supervision and is responsible for
providing security of buildings, grounds, and parking areas. This position is
governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
1. Patrols grounds and parking areas observing for violators, safety hazards,
and unauthorized persons and may issue parking tickets and take other
corrective actions for minor violations. Coordinates with local law
enforcement agencies for the more serious violations.
2. Inspects buildings for fire and safety hazards, break-ins unsecured doors
and windows and takes corrective action as needed.
3. Transports institution residents to and from campus, subdues unruly
residents, escorts to designated area, and accompanies staff to and from
parking lots as requested.
4. Operates agency switchboard during holidays and non-working hours,
receives and routes calls, directs visitors, and maintains telephone and
security logs.
5. Monitors security and fire panel for security and fire detection, assists
with checking the alarm systems and emergency power supply, and inspects
and maintains fire extinguishers.
6. Conducts investigation of incidents and writes investigative reports.
7. Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Security Officer I has regular contact with agency staff and building
residents. Occasional contact with the public is required.
SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS
Frequent shift work, lifting residents, and exposure to an element of danger
are required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and complete reports.
Ability to patrol in vehicles or on foot for long periods of time.
Ability to handle and subdue unruly persons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The formal education equivalent of a tenth grade education.
Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or
part of these basic requirements upon approval of the Qualifications Review
Committee.
