CLASS SUMMARY
The Family Service Worker Trainee works under immediate supervision and is
responsible for assisting in providing protective, foster care, and supportive
services for abused or neglected children. This position is governed by state
and federal laws and agency policy.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
1. Provides assistance in investigating suspected child abuse and neglect
complaints to determine if allegations can be substantiated by making
on-site visits, securing background information, and interviewing parties
involved.
2. Documents casework activities by completing forms and writing narratives.
3. Discusses investigative findings and observations with Family Service
Worker and supervisor.
4. Provides assistance in developing case plans to establish goals,
objectives, tasks, and time frames for all parties involved.
5. Recruits families, provides assistance in conducting home studies and
family assessments to determine appropriate child placements, and visits
clients and/or foster parents to monitor progress toward case objectives.
8. Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Family Service Worker Trainee has regular contact with clients, law
enforcement officials, medical personnel, teachers, day care personnel, foster
parents, agency and private attorneys, and the general public.
SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS
Frequent twenty-four (24) hour on-call duty for response to assist in
emergency life and death situations and frequent exposure to physical and
verbal abuse is required.
Federally mandated service deadlines coupled with heavy case loads and the
life and death nature of the work creates a stressful environment.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling, social work, and case
management.
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods of investigating.
Ability to interview and obtain information.
Ability to prepare, present, and review oral and written technical and
confidential information and reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in social work,
sociology, psychology, or a related field.
Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or
part of these basic requirements upon approval of the Qualifications Review
Committee.
