This position reports directly to the Director of Health Information Services. The Coding Compliance Manager assures that the coding function is carried out in accordance with government regulations and requirements. To provide pro-active direction and manage the coding process for all medical records. Further activities to include educational updates for the medical staff, administration and other hospital departments. Assures appropriate reimbursement is realized through the proper assignment of DRG's, ICD-9-CM, CPT codes, and provision of necessary documentation to Business Services. Insures completeness and accuracy of other data collected for planning, research, special studies and OSHPD requirements for improvement of patient care and timely billing to meet the hospital goal of 1.8 days of unbilled accounts.
High School Graduate or GED. BS/BA preferred. Extensive working knowledge of DRG's, APC's, ICD-9-CM, and CPT coding systems and related coding issues. Minimum 3-5 years direct experience in the areas of coding, training and service development. Strong communication, training and demonstrated organizational skills. Willingness to accept and adapt to technological changes with the health care industry. Minimum 1-3 years of supervisory experience in an acute care hospital. Ability to work closely with the medical staff and other departments to create a complete and accurate database of clinical and demographic data while ensuring appropriate coding. Certification by American Health Information Management Association [AHIMA] as a Registered Health Information Technician [RHIT] or Registered Health Information Administrator [RHIA]. In lieu of RHIT or RHIA, certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Certified Coding Specialist (CSS) considered. Maintenance of continuing education requirements as established by the AHIMA.
