CNA Insurance, the seventh largest commercial insurance company in the United States, is currently recruiting for a claims professional to handle highly-complex general liability claims in our major case unit (MCU). The current case load has an average of $260K in reeserves. The current case load has 100-105 claims and approximately 23M in total reserves. CNA is one of the largest writers of construction liability insurance in the United States, so these claims often have multiple defendants and require an experienced adjuster who has expert knowledge of handling litigated files. Knowledge of complex coverage issues and contractual liability is key in this role. The caseload will cover most states west of the Mississippi River with the exception of AZ and NM. We seek an adjuster who has knowledge of and has handled multiple states. We prefer that the individual in this position work from a CNA office, however, for a highly-skilled adjuster who does not live near a CNA office, we would consider a work-from-home situation. This position will require some travel, about 10%. A formal job description follows: Essential Duties & Responsibilities 1. Works on highly complex investigations of claims, liability, compensability and damages. Determines if a major claim should be settled or litigated. 2. Manages all types of investigative activity on major claims. Coordinates discovery and litigation strategy with staff counsel or panel attorneys. 3. Negotiates highly complex settlement packages, sets reserves and authorizes payment within scope of authority, settling claims in most cost effective manner and ensuring timely issuance of disbursements. 4. Coordinates third party recovery with subrogation/salvage unit. 5. Makes recommendations on claims policy and processes to management. 6. Analyzes claims activities; prepares and presents reports to management. 7. Works with attorneys, account representatives, agents, doctors and insureds regarding the handling and/or disposition of highly complex claims. 8. Keeps current on state/territory regulations and issues, industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.. 9. May provide guidance and assistance to less experienced claims staff and other functional areas. 10. May be responsible for special claims projects and presentations. May perform additional duties as assigned. Reporting Relationship Manager or above. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities 1. Advanced technical and product specific expertise, claims resolution skill and knowledge of insurance and claims principles, practices and procedures. 2. Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners. 3. Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects. 4. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues. 5. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems. 6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. Education & Experience 1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designation preferred. 2. Minimum eight years claims experience. Candidate must have extensive commercial general liability experience has a claims adjuster.
