Chief Financial Officer

 

Our client, The Smith-Midland Corporation, is a small, publicly traded manufacturer of precast concrete products.  Located in Midland, Virginia (near Warrenton Va), Smith-Midland is searching for a hands-on Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to direct and oversee all the financial activities of the corporation including preparation of current financial reports as well as summaries and forecasts for future business growth and general economic outlook.  The CFO is a contributing member of the senior management team and reports to the Chief Operating Officer and the President.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Manage the day-to-day activities of the accounting and finance department.  Supervise a work force of 4-5 accountants and clerks.  Monitor accounting department’s productive output and quality to ensure optimum efficiency and formulate creative solutions to enhance cost effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of services and administration of the department. Ensure that all financial and accounting activities are carried out with the highest degree of integrity, controls and ethical behavior and in accordance with regulatory requirements and accepted practices.Provide timely and accurate filing of regulatory reports in accordance with the requirements of a publicly traded company.  Prepare shareholder and board meetings and communications.  Issue press releases aimed at improving the company’s image and protecting its interests.Handle all financial activities related to the trading of shares, including stock options, dividends and warrants.Schedule and coordinate company audits, and review effectiveness of auditing services.Direct the timely and accurate preparation of all financial and management reports, including income statements, balance sheets, reports to shareholders, tax returns, and reports for government regulatory agencies. Continuously analyze financial reports, indicators and company operations to identify variances and to pinpoint opportunities and areas for improvement.  Provide reporting to senior management. Prepare budgets, forecast of earnings, cash and investment requirements for the company.  Set up and coordinate appropriate review meetings.  Support management decision making through the development of strategic planning information. Set up and maintain relationships with banks and other financial institutions to assure funding for the company’s activities.  Supervise borrowing and investment of funds for optimum return.  Work with banks and/or investment bankers to raise additional capital as required for expansion. Actively manage the collection of money due the company.  Establish policies to govern extension of credit to customers.  Follow up and quickly resolve issues affecting delays in payments of amounts due.In accordance with tax laws and regulations in all areas where the company conducts business, determine tax liabilities of the company and its subsidiaries, and assure optimum company compliance and timeliness in filing.Manage the maintenance of computer systems and network.  Assure that company systems are updated to current technology standards.Assure optimum use of company computerized accounting systems through upgrades, implementation, training and continuous improvement.Assist the sales and estimating functions in establishing product pricing and job bids.Provide accounting services, oversight and direction to all company subsidiaries.  Assure that common standards and practices are implemented and used.  Consolidate and analyze data.

 

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

Degree in business administration, accounting, or finance.Minimum of six years of progressive experience in a hands-on Accounting Department role handling numerous transactions.  At least two years should be at a Manager level.  Some experience must be with a publicly traded company.  Experience at the Controller level and ready to step up the CFO role; or an experienced CFO who specifically wants a senior management role in a small, publicly traded company.  CPA designation preferred. Knowledge of SEC regulations and public company requirements.Knowledge of database and accounting computer application systems to supply the most accurate financial information. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Demonstrated high level of skills in interpersonal relationships, people management and leadership.Proficient with common computer applications and systems including MS Windows in a network environment, Word, Excel, Access, Peachtree, Abra.
