The Chemist I will support new product development and continued improvement of coatings in the Automotive Refinish and related markets.   The Chemist I will perform the following tasks:  Develop topcoat formulations for automotive and general industrial end uses that pass automotive quality testing. Document findings from experimental designs and share knowledge with colleagues. All work activity will be conducted in conformance with ISO 9001:2000.  Provide technical customer support, production support and technical guidance for marketing/sales during start-up phase.  Engage in direct communication with sales support groups, bringing customer’s needs back to laboratory.  Perform duties within a small team of Technical, Marketing and Sales with a high level of initiative.  Possess problem solving abilities and innovation.  Perform duties with a broad depth of technical expertise. Travel as necessary to perform the duties of the position.  This position is part of a job family with multiple levels and will be filled at a level that is commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. Required:Bachelors degree in chemistry/chemical engineering  with 2 years related experience (i.e formulating products and/or prior experience testing products such as coatings, inks, printing & packaging, thin films) OR Associates degree in sciences with on the job continued chemical training and 5 years preferred related experience.  BASF recognizes Institutes of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.The ability to interpret complex paint physical test data.Knowledge of production scale-up and/or production unit operations as it relates to coatings. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.    Good communication skills, including formal presentation.  Able to communicate with color experts in language common to this field.High level of initiative and follow-up including planning and organization skills. The ability to contribute as a member of a cross-functional inter-business unit team. Past work experience within a Quality System environment (i.e. ISO 9001:2000, QS9000, TS16949).High level of judgment/ problem solving skills.  Desired:Ability to develop and execute experimental plans, form internal and external contacts.Ability to judge color. Proficiency in Powerpoint. Excellent written & oral communication skills. Ability to interact with customers and conduct work with professional demeanor.Previous experience preparing, spraying, and/or testing of coatings over substrates of any type. Working familiarity with waterborne coating systems, especially basecoat systems as well as with pigments, additives and dispersion equipment.  Knowledge of intellectual property protection.
