RTI is an independent organization dedicated to conducting innovative, multidisciplinary research that improves the human condition. With a worldwide staff of more than 4,000 people, RTI offers innovative research and development and a full spectrum of multidisciplinary services. Universities in North Carolina founded RTI in 1958 as the first scientific organization in and centerpiece of the Research Triangle Park.
The Center for Energy Technology (CET) at RTI International is seeking highly motivated candidates for full-time, entry-level Chemical Engineer positions at its corporate headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC. Qualified individuals will assist senior CET researchers/engineers in laboratory work for various research programs focused on the development of novel process technologies for clean energy production and utilization. Novel technologies will be focused primarily in the areas of coal/biomass gasification, gas cleaning (e.g., desulfurization), syngas conversion and processing (e.g., hydrogen production, Fischer Tropsch synthesis, alcohol production), and carbon dioxide capture and separation.
Laboratory responsibilities and activities will include (but will not be limited to) the following:
• Synthesis, preparation, and scale-up of catalysts and sorbents using laboratory- and bench-scale equipment (spray dryer, extruder, rotavap, etc.)
• Catalyst/Sorbent materials characterization and performance testing and coordination of such work with a team of CET scientists, engineers, and technicians
• Operation of laboratory-, bench-, and small pilot-scale process reactor systems (fixed-bed, fluidized-bed, slurry bubble column, etc.) and other high-pressure, high-temperature systems and equipment
• Design, construction, and installation of laboratory-, bench-, and/or pilot-scale test systems, including (i) specification and procurement of process instrumentation and system components; (ii) preparation of process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) using AutoCAD and/or Visio; and (iii) process modeling and simulation using AspenPlus
• Operation of analytical equipment (gas chromatographs, gas analyzers, etc.), data acquisition software, and process control hardware
• Handling of high-pressure, compressed gases; chemicals; solutions/slurries; etc.
• Maintenance of accurate, detailed records of project activities
• Data analysis and interpretation
• Report writing
Qualifications:
• B.S. in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
• Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills with sound knowledge of chemistry and chemical engineering principles
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Ability to do high-quality work in a timely manner with minimum supervision
• Well-developed interpersonal skills for effective interaction with project team members and a variety of other staff (engineers, chemists, technicians, vendors, etc.)
• Experience working in a laboratory environment desirable
