POSITION SUMMARY:

Gambro BCT is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Cell Protein Biologist. This individual will hold responsibility for the oversight of facilities and staff associated with blood component biological research in Navigant Biotechnologies’ pathogen inactivation program for blood products. The scope of work will include elucidation of the effects on plasma protein, platelet and red cell function following treatment of these products with photochemical procedures for the inactivation of pathogens in blood. This individual will conduct research in protein chemistry and nucleic acid chemistry designed to elucidate the consequences of photochemical or chemical treatment of blood products. This individual will be responsible for the organization and execution of scientific studies involving the biological consequences associated with the pathogen inactivation process. On site and external contract laboratory work associated with research and development studies will also be included in primary activities. This individual will be responsible for the organization of facilities in compliance with regulatory and OSHA requirements including facility construction, equipment needs and staff training relating to plasma protein, platelet and red cell research.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the oversight of plasma protein, red cell and platelet research facilities including compliance with all regulatory and certification requirements.

Responsible for training of staff necessary to maintain an effective research program in the area of blood component studies.

Responsible for the preparation of written and oral reports for internal and external presentation at scientific and technical meetings.

Responsible for preparation of sections of regulatory filing documents related to studies of plasma protein, platelet and red cell function following photochemical or chemical treatment processes and storage.

Responsible for technical representation of research results before regulatory and customer groups as required by regulatory and marketing functions.

Responsible for evaluation of the effects of new methodologies for the inactivation of virus and bacteria on plasma proteins, red cells and platelets and establishment of these methods for use in development projects.

Responsible for the preparation of technical reports relating to biological research involving blood components including white cells.

Responsible for the preparation of research protocols and execution of research involving virus and bacteria inactivation and replication and understanding of photochemical mechanisms including interactions and effects with blood components including white cells.

Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge by attending relevant meetings and visiting key clinicians and investigators. Analyzes and reports on these experiences to development group.

Works with management team, as requested, to evaluate scientific related aspects of new ventures involving pathogen inactivation methods.

Performs independent evaluation, selection, and application in making adaptations and modifications to project work.

Has total project leadership responsibilities relating to blood component biological research projects in support of Navigant Biotechnologies pathogen inactivation program for blood products according to defined program objectives.

Develops, mentors, and provides work direction to technicians, engineers, specialists, or scientists.
