SoBran has a current opening for a Breeder Technician at the National Institutes of Health, Building 50.
Description of Duties:
* Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of NIAID Division of Intramural Research animals, specifically in relation to the breeding program.
* Perform duties of Animal Caretaker I and II.
* Assist in training of Animal Caretaker I and Cagewash personnel.
* Set up breeding pairs of animals as directed per technical requests.
* Set up the breeding to include mating and cage organization in the room.
* Maintain all records to include: cage cards, mating logs, weaning calendar, and change logs.
* Check bi-weekly for new litters (animal caretakers to check daily).
* Perform weaning and recheck sexes in one week.
* Communicate with investigators as needed to ensure the breeding colonies are producing appropriately to include animal numbers, breeders producing adequate litters, etc.
* Produce a guideline book and maintain it for each strain to include special instructions/purpose of the breeders i.e. produce a certain amount of weanlings for an experiment, produce weanlings to continue a line.
* Communicate with managers on progress of breeding colonies and any issues related to the breeding colonies.
* Assist in performing technical experimental procedures as directed.
* Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Experience:
Must have knowledge on how to maintain a rodent breeding colony. Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties of Breeder Technician.
Required Education:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT).
