The Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs (OCA) in Atlanta has openings for two attorneys.
The mission of the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs is to enforce Georgia's Fair Business Practices Act and other criminal and civil consumer protection laws.
Attorneys at OCA take cases from inception through to an administrative conclusion. OCA attorneys provides advice, counsel, support and technical assistance to the agency head, senior management, and/or staff on a variety of legal matters. They respond to requests for information and provide answers, opinions, and recommendations regarding legal issues in the area of consumer protection; review investigative reports; coordinate and implement due process procedures and procedures for appeals as provided for in applicable legislation; participate in the preparation and coordination of cases prior to and during court trials and administrative hearings; represent the office, acts as agent, presents, or otherwise participates in administrative hearings; identifies and resolve legal problems; review decisions and agreements, and recommend solutions or remedies; participate in the implementation of settlements, agreements, and/or legal judgments; prepare legal and other working documents.
The first opening is for a Supervising Attorney (Attorney 2) who will supervise the work of other Attorneys and act as liaison with the Georgia Department of Law and coordinate work in legal proceedings litigated by the Department of Law or other prosecuting authority and, at the request of the director, review proposed legislation and/or draft new legislation. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience as a supervising attorney.
The second opening is a staff position and will be filled at either Attorney 1 or Attorney 2 depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Minimum Training & Experience:
Attorney 1 Level:
Completion of a law degree and license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR Eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR Reciprocity.
Attorney 2 Level: Completion of a law degree AND License to practice law in the State of Georgia OR Eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR Reciprocity
AND
Three years of relevant legal experience.
Position specific qualifications:
Knowledge of principles of legal research
AND
Ability to analyze a wide range of evidence relating to the filed of consumer protection
AND
Ability to present orally and in writing, comments, opinions and recommendations in the area of consumer protection
AND
Working level skill in the use of word-processing and spreadsheet computer application programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an ABA accredited school of law and membership in good standing in the State Bar of Georgia.
Knowledge of principles of Georgia law relating to Georgia's Fair Business Practices Act and other criminal and civil consumer protection laws.
Experience practicing law in the area of consumer protection.
Experience litigating or participating in appeals in a state court, a state court of appeals, a state supreme court and/or federal court.
Intermediate level expertise in the use of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
