Position Description:
Key Responsibilities: • Financial Statement Close: Oversees the monthly and quarterly financial close process; Related activities include: financial statement review and analysis, detailed understanding of journal entries and account reconciliations; timely consultation and partnership with the Technical Accounting team in ensuring that non-standard transactions are appropriately supported/recorded; consolidations oversight; and oversight and responsibility for schedules to be provided to the SEC Reporting team for external reporting or to Gilead's external auditors related to quarterly reviews and audit testing. U.S. GAAP knowledge is required. Additional knowledge/familiarity with IFRS a plus. • Internal Controls Compliance – Ensures business transactions are executed/recorded in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles; Promotes and maintains a rigorous control environment and ensures that any issues related to Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance are addressed timely and are appropriately remediated; Proactively owns business processes and works closely with the internal audit team as it relates to management’s testing of controls. Ensures that day-to-day accounting is consistent with Gilead's corporate accounting policies and procedures as defined by the Corporate Controller's Manual. Attends seminars and webcasts to remain current on areas of expertise and appropriately develops a training/development program for the team. • Process Improvement: Drives discussion and action in improving existing accounting and/or business processes in a pragmatic way; Related activities include: exploration of ways to automate existing manual processes; teaming with other process participants to explore executable improvements and implement project plans that will help deliver best-in-class workflow and controls; instilling a culture of continuous improvement in a methodical but expeditious manner. Ensures effective change management is coupled with continuous improvement. • Project Management – Plans and manages the goals and objectives of the accounting team; strives to anticipate and effectively address obstacles. Works closely with Corporate and Cost Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, Tax, Treasury, Legal, operating departments, senior management, internal and external auditors. Flexible in participating in ad hoc special projects. • Leadership – Capable of providing guidance and gaining respect based on persuasion and competence rather than the use of position power and with the stature and sensitivity to exercise leadership by example. Collaborates effectively with internal Gilead teams and stays abreast of the company’s business to proactively identify potential accounting/reporting/system needs/issues and to implement timely solutions. Able to handle the ambiguity that arises from time to time in a global organization in a multi-country environment. An effective team player, whose energy and well developed communication skills make this person a persuasive leader, negotiator and relationship builder. Requirements: BA/BS in Finance/Accounting, CPA, 10+ years progressively responsible accounting experience (4+ years in a supervisory role) and proven experience with controls, ERP systems, and implementing/driving continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have 4+ years with a Big Four firm and additional experience in a publicly traded company (life sciences industry highly desired). Qualifications: ? Qualifications:
Manages, prepares, administers, and directs the accounting close and financial reporting process for several areas of the accounting function which may include general accounting, cost accounting, credit/collections, payroll, AP, worldwide accounting consolidations, SEC reporting, etc. Reviews and approves accounting transactions and account reconciliations, providing relevant fiscal information to executive management team. Maintains ledger integrity and ensures financial compliance with the worldwide Controller's manual and to all applicable laws and regulations. Provides management and leadership to accounting staff. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of their function. Helps develop operational specifications for financial systems, supports various divisions, units, and functions for financial reporting. Helps develop, maintain and assess internal controls related to Gilead's accounting and financial reporting systems. Regularly interacts with senior management on matters concerning several functional areas, divisions and/or customers. Requires the ability to change the thinking of or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations. Manages and administers the relationship with internal and external auditors for areas of responsibility. Europe Specific Job Requirements Coordinates, administers and controls the financial operations of the organization. Functional responsibilities include directing the accounting function, establishing and maintaining budgetary controls and procedures, and preparing financial reports. The position also directs the activities of the management information systems function. Prepares necessary schedules and reports for government agencies. Interfaces with internal and external auditors. Interfaces with business group and administrative 'functions'. Interfaces with European HQ staff for implementation and maintenance of group and European Financial Systems for application of policies and procedures. Key member of local management committee and may sit on local board of Directors where appropriate. The Associate Director, Finance has not only a direct reporting relationship within the local organization but also a strong functional reporting relationship to Senior Financial Management at the European HQ level. interfaces with Corporate Accounting, maintains financial reporting in both local and U.S. GAAP, and complies with worldwide Controller's manual. Develops, maintains and assesses internal controls.
