Position Overview: The Assistant Communications Technician is in training for the position of Journeyman Communications Technician. This Position is Unassigned.  The Assistant Communications Technician shall work with and under the direction of a Journeyman Communications Technician and will be allowed a maximum of two (2) years to complete study materials, examinations, and on-the-job training to qualify as a Journeyman Communications Technician.  A Journeyman Communications Technician has an F.C.C. general radio telephone license to maintain microwave and radio equipment, as well as a working knowledge of company communications equipment.  A Journeyman’s duties are to install, maintain, adjust, test, troubleshoot, and repair voice and data communications equipment, which includes but is not limited to lightwave, microwave, radio, SCADA, telemetering and associated switching or termination equipment. Physical requirements may include working in confined spaces and in elevated work areas such as heights from ladders, towers, structures, roofs, scaffolds, buckets etc, on construction sites, near moving mechanical parts, in the proximity of fumes, dust, noise, water, working in close proximity to cables and conductors energized at 600 volts or higher. May work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions, and be responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles. Minimum Qualifications: Must have a high school diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent. Must have an FCC license or be able to obtain a license within the first six (6) months of entering the program. Must possess one, or any combination, of the following:           -         Military training and experience related to the Electronic Communications field          -         Electronic Telecommunications School Certificate           -         Electronic Engineering courses or experienceSuccessfully complete a written examination covering basic electronic circuit theory, calculations, and diagrams to demonstrate a working knowledge of the fundamentals required to train as a technician.Preferred Qualifications: A Journeyman in one of the branches of the electrical trade, or with equivalent qualifying training and experience. All offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
