Job Summary
The Acquisitions Editor manages the growth and development of the publishing program, acquisition of new authors, development of assigned projects; conducts market research, writes and implements plans, reviews manuscripts, monitors and controls manuscript progress and expenses, visits schools, finds and cultivates prospective authors, and manages the publishing program to achieve Cengage Learning’s criteria for growth and profitability.

Job Description:
1. Establish a schedule with the assigned authors, monitor that schedule, and take the necessary steps to keep the author/project on the established schedules.
2. Conduct market research, such as phone surveys, questionnaires, and collecting and analyzing recommendations for changes from current adopters of the current editions of books being revised.
3. Locate and make arrangements with expert reviews to provide market feedback on manuscripts for new and revised books; analyze the comments from reviewers and have authors make changes as necessary to ensure that each product will satisfy the needs of the market place to the fullest extent possible.
4. Compare Cengage’s products with their competitors and prepare detailed comparison documents, including recommendations for improving Cengage’s products.
5. Prepare complete manuscripts ready for release to production. This includes check the manuscript to ensure that all changes identified at project analysis meetings have been made, ensuring that all art work, photographs, and permission files are complete, and completing all paperwork.
6. Identify potential new authors, obtain proposals form those authors, determine the quality of the proposals, and negotiate contracts according to established policies.
7. Ensure that each assigned project stays within the budget allowed by the approved funding. The number of illustrations and halftones, length of manuscript, delivery of camera-ready materials, permission, expenses for the preparation of supplements should match the specifications outlined in the publication proposals/funding.
8. Provide information and support as necessary to all team members, especially the Marketing Department, to help maximize the product’s potential in the market place.
9. Assist team members in the design, production and manufacturing of assigned products to ensure their timely introduction to the marketplace and maximum sales potential.
10. Prepare complete, accurate, and detailed reports and deliver them on schedule: monthly reports, copyright schedules, business plans, and other special reports as requested.
11. Perform other duties as needed to ensure achievement of team goals.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. BA/BS degree of equivalent theoretical depth.
2. Two years publishing experience, preferably in editorial acquisition or sales.
3. Proven track record of results.
4. Strong leadership, facilitator, and communication, especially negotiation, skills.
5. Must be able to travel (air, car, and train) as needed (including overnight travel); work overtime as needed. 6. Incumbent must work under pressure of deadlines.
Must be good communicator, have the desire and ability to put company needs ahead of personal goals, be patient, demonstrate good analytical and problem-solving abilities, strong reasoning skills, and ability to concentrate on details. Ability to understand financial statement, sales forecasts, production plans and manage same areas is critical.
