Job Description: TITLE: Accounting Manager PURPOSE Under the direction of the Corporate Controller or Assistant Controller, manages assigned areas of general or revenue accounting or financial reporting, including the preparation of reports and statistics reflecting earnings, profits, cash balances, and other financial results. Formulates and administers accounting practices throughout the organization to ensure that financial and operating reports accurately reflect the condition of the business and that all recording and processing activities are accomplished in a timely and accurate manner, according to generally accepted accounting principles and statutory and corporate requirements. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Manages the establishment and implementation of sound accounting policies, procedures, and controls in general accounting or financial reporting. Coordinates with other accounting areas to assure that accounting system interfaces are reliable and accurate. Participates in the development and integration of new accounting systems and reporting procedures. 2. Participates in the semi-annual budget process, including the preparation of numerous statistical projects and related reports. 3. Supervises the analysis of all financial statements for the organization and prepares monthly fluctuation narrative. Develops reports including income and expense reports, general ledger, revenue, or fixed asset system reports as needed. 4. Writes and maintains reports and manages their structure and internal/external distribution. 5. Compiles data concerning effectiveness of current systems through the study of actual operations; examination of external and internal audit reports; and discussion with company personnel. Utilizes information to formulate, develop, and implement new and revised procedures. 6. Issues directives and revises existing general ledger, revenue system documentation, and financial reporting methods to cover procedural changes. 7. Provides for adequate training and cross training for staff. Assures staffing levels are maintained. Performs performance reviews, disciplinary actions, counseling, etc. within accounting department. Participates in department budgeting process. 8. Maintains adequate detailed subsidiary ledgers for all company balance sheet accounts. 9. Assists with the integration of joint ventures and title acquisitions into the company's accounting and financial reporting systems. 10. Assists in completion of various statutory reporting schedules and the collection/summarization of data for statistical plans. 11. Manages or coordinates the month-end closing process. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 1. Extensive knowledge of statutory and generally accepted accounting principles and accounting system procedures and controls. 2. Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both in writing and orally, in person and by telephone. 3. Supervisory skills sufficient to manage, train, and evaluate personnel. 4. Excellent ability to operate a personal computer and peripherals, using database, presentation, and spreadsheet software. Education, Experience and Licensing Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance with 10 or more years of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
