Position Summary

The Director of Engineering will provide overall leadership for a cross functional engineering organization and as a member of the senior leadership team will merge the strategic with the tactical driving concept, design, and delivery of engineering services within a specific plant.  Exemplified through leadership focusing on: growth in team technical competence, design to cost, metrics driven decisions, quality product delivered on-time within cost targets, and implementation of practices designed to measure and deliver engineering optimization.  The Director will be responsible for ensuring full compliance to all applicable requirements and specifications imposed by the company, the customer and/or the industry while seeking creative cost effective solutions; challenging the status quo and evolving the culture within engineering locally as well as throughout the division.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop a strong relationship and shared vision with the division´s senior business leaders establishing a common vision, to create and deliver competitive strength to the organization; specific focus in leveraging strength and teamwork across the division engineering organizations Increase the overall productivity of the engineering organization as evidenced by lower cost, higher quality solutions provided on-timeEstablish overall direction while creating and implementing a vision for continual improvement of engineering services at a detail level as well as higher organizational level; works with others to establish methodologies to resolve process issuesDrive new thoughts in approach, process and methodology while respecting the work and processes of the pastManage all aspects of product development cycle within operational budgets and functional goals of the facility.Provide people leadership focused upon personal and collective accountability while fostering an environment that enhances personal growth and career development through mentoring and training; performance management, and challenging the organization to strive for higher performance levels.Lead the planning, organizing, directing, and implementing the toolsets - processes, hardware, & software required for product development, launch, and life cycle support; this will include the identification, development, and implementation of world-class engineering systems, practices, and procedures to increase the efficient utilization of engineering in multiple plant facilities, thereby enhancing PCT´s capabilities; Build a reputation for the engineering organization of high integrity, competitive leadership, and sustained performance by delivering quality product on a timely basisEnsure full compliance to all applicable requirements and specifications imposed by the company, the customer and/or the industry.  Develop clear and effective performance metrics for the engineering organization as a whole, as well as individuals, measuring the effectiveness; using metric trends and data to drive the business and decisions thereinAct as a key member of the senior management team and foster a proactive becoming the conscious of the organization by truly reflecting the inner workings of the business, recommending and implementing solutions to company issues to drive performance enabling the company to meet and exceed its near and long-term objectives.Manage engineering issues by acting as the primary liaison with other members of manufacturing & supply chain.Measure and drive internal performance for all aspects of engineering and define budgetary impact.Ensures disciplined, aggressive proposal evaluation support with a process, technical evaluation and cost/price analysisParticipate in cross functional design reviews and approvals with project teams and suppliers25-50% travel

 

Supervisory Scope of Position

Position directly leads a staff of 4 functional managers; indirectly responsible for approximately 40-50 employeesDirectly accountable to assure regular 2-way communication flow within the entire engineering organization; providing information, soliciting feedback and makes changes based on bothResponsible for the growth and development of the employees within the organization through complete performance management including regular assessments and feedback, setting and delivering upon development plans, annual reviews and bi-annual goals and objectives evaluation

 

Key Success Factors

Review current budgets, manloading, rates, etc. Takes ownership of the assigned projects to drive targeted results for schedule, quality and cost. Implement effective gate review process consistent with overall PCT and Power Systems, complete with metrics. Lead root cause analysis review of design issues on strategic programs Work with PCT & PS leadership to determine appropriate Centers of Excellence across PCT & Power Systems Layout Strategic Plan for Engineering/Product Development Provide effective communication internally and externally; engaging and informing engineering team and internal customers fullyWorking with the VP/GM and HR Director, assess the skill, knowledge and talent within the engineering organization and develop a plan to address areas as identified as both strengths and/or weaknessesAssess Leadership & skill sets across the organization at all levels, complete with recommendations

 

Basic Qualifications

BS in Engineering (mechanical or electrical preferred), with 10-14 years experience in total; 7-8 of which should be in managing both direct reports and larger indirect organizationsMBA strongly desired Experience leading the design of product within in a manufacturing environment, including experience leading DTC initiatives and exposure to various operations and finance functions.Experience required in the definition, refinement, design, development and delivery of technical and/or business solutionsProject management strongly experience desiredExperience in Defense or Aerospace industry desirableMust be US Citizen; able to obtain security clearance

 

Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrated effective implementation of process improvement toolsets into a highly engineered environment (could include:  lean, six sigma, design to cost, root cause analysis, etc) Demonstrated effective use of metrics to drive product development efforts Demonstrated ability to lead in a cross functional matrix organization focused on highly engineered product Progressive responsibility and skill in engineering within both a build to print and full development environment; multi-discipline experience a plus Demonstrated leader who is an excellent motivator, charismatic, action-oriented and demonstrates confidenceDemonstrated ability to significantly impact profitability through engineering optimizationOutstanding communication skills (written and oral) with the ability to successfully interact at all levels of a matrix organization; ability to develop relationships with all levels of the organizationDemonstrated ability to apply sound judgment to complex program/business issues; results-oriented, self-motivated, and process driven.Lead conflict resolution and manage difficult situations in a professional manner; effective problem solverFlexibility to travel, including international if requiredUnderstanding of program management tools (P3E experience a plus)
